History:
The Väggaskolan secondary school in Karlshamn, Blekinge, was Gunnar Asplund’s first major architectural commission, built between 1912 and 1918. Asplund not only designed the building itself but also created its furnishings, demonstrating great attention to detail throughout the project. In a letter dated August 24, 1915, he proposed designing the school’s furniture, which was subsequently produced by local craftsmen based on his drawings. Interestingly, the design of this particular table was originally intended for Gotthard Dieden, who had commissioned furniture for the Swedish Railway Board in 1917. Asplund designed a similar table for Dieden, but when he left the Railway Board as early as 1918, the table was never realised. Towards the final stages of the Väggaskolan project, it became necessary to furnish certain rooms with more distinctive, characterful pieces, rather than the standard school furniture. It is likely that Asplund seized this opportunity to adapt and repurpose his earlier designs for Dieden, incorporating them into the interiors of the Karlshamn school.
