Prototype Armchair
Produced by Artek
1938
Prototype of the armchair model Aulanko.
Oak base, original velvet upholstery.
The Aulanko hotel built in the mid-1930s by architects Märta Blomstedt and Matt Lampén is located on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi, Hämeenlinna region, Finland. One of the hotel lounges was designed to separate the hotel rooms from the hustle and bustle of public spaces. This room housed the iconic “Aulanko” armchair, specially designed by Märta Blomstedt for this social space. The examples installed in the hotel had nickel plated tubular steel feet that curved gently in the middle. This chair is a prototype produced by Artek with wooden runner feet and is likely unique.
The original drawing for this model is retained within the Artek archives.
